The boom in cellular phone market has been a reason for indigenous groups to enter in the fray and explore the still not tapped rural market of India. Looking at the boom and keeping in mind the Indian rural economy, Kolkata based telecom conglomerate Gee Pee Infotech Pvt. Ltd. has also entered the cellular market with a wide rage of products suitable to the wallet of rural consumers.

With technological collaboration with certain Chinese companies, Gee Pee has come up with GSM mobile handsets between a price range of Rs.1200 and Rs.6000.

The company is soon going to launch its unique handset that will be available to the consumers at an unexpected price band of Rs.950 without any further hidden cost’, said Bijay Agarwal, MD, Gee Pee while briefing the press in the launching ceremony of Gee Pee Mobile handsets in Bhubaneswar, Orissa.

Apart from launching the products, Mr Agarwal also announced to start a manufacturing unit in Bhubaneswar very shortly.

It’s worth mentioning that cellular phone market in India is growing faster these days. As per a latest study by Gartner, cellular service in India is expected to exceed $37 billion mark by 2012 with an annual growth rate of 18 percent and total number of connection is also expected to exceed 737 million mark with an annual growth rate of 21percent. Garner Report says that the cellular penetration would also exceed to 60.7 percent, which was only 19.8 percent in 2007 finding the development of rural market as the major reason behind.

In Orissa the market is equally growing. The population of GSM mobile users in Orissa has reached close to 45 lakhs. The scope of growth is still wider as above 90% of the rural market in Orissa is still untapped.

At this point low cost products of Gee Pee definitely have a better chance in the market. However, other than the features, Gee Pee will have to be more cautious about the quality and after sale services components to keep its products in best buy category.
